guide 05 · marketing · ranked by leverage, not hype

Marketing your eBook — ranked by what's worth your time.

Most eBook marketing advice lists forty tactics as if they were equal. They aren't. Here's the honest hierarchy — the few things that compound, the several that help, and the popular ones that mostly burn money.

Tier 1

The compounding layer (do these first)

Metadata & categoriesYour subtitle, description and category choices work every hour the store is open, forever. First two description lines sell hardest — they show above the fold. Categories: specific and winnable beats broad and impossible.
Early reviewsSocial proof gates everything else — ads, browsing conversion, algorithm favour. Build a launch team; ask honestly; never buy.
An email listThe only audience you own. Start before launch (a lead-magnet chapter works), and every future book launches warmer than the last.
Tier 2

The amplification layer

Once Tier 1 converts: price promotions ($0.99 launches with a return to normal price), cross-promotion with adjacent authors, podcast and newsletter guesting in your topic space, and — for nonfiction — turning the book's frameworks into shareable content that links back. Each works precisely as hard as your product page converts.

Tier 3

The money-burn layer (approach late, measure hard)

Paid ads (Amazon, Meta) amplify a converting page and punish a weak one; run them only after organic conversion is proven, with per-click math done against your royalty. Press releases, paid 'featured book' placements and social blasting to no audience are the classic budget sinks — the same arithmetic that exposes $299 ghostwriting exposes $499 'guaranteed promotion'.

Questions

Asked and answered

How do I market an eBook with no budget?

In leverage order: metadata and categories (free, permanent), early reviews (free, compounding), an email list started before launch (free, owned), and content answering readers' questions. Paid ads come last.

How important are Amazon categories and keywords?

Highest-leverage marketing you'll ever do: chosen once, working forever. Pick categories you can plausibly rank in (smaller, specific) and keywords readers actually type.

How do I get my first reviews?

Ethically: a launch team from your network (free copies, honest reviews, disclosure), outreach to readers of comparable books, and a request in the back matter. Never buy reviews.

Do Amazon ads work for eBooks?

They can — once the cover, description and reviews convert. Ads amplify a page that sells; they can't fix one that doesn't.

A book worth marketing comes first.
