guide 03 · the pillar · idea to published, in order

From idea to published — the whole path, in order.

Publishing an eBook is a chain of eight dependent steps. Do them in order and it's straightforward; do them out of order and you pay twice. This guide walks the chain end to end, with links to the deeper guide at every step.

Step 1–2

Get the manuscript written — and edited

Everything downstream depends on the manuscript. Write it yourself (budget a year of discipline), or work with a ghostwriter (6–8 weeks, your voice preserved). Either way, professional editing is the least skippable step in the chain: developmental for the structure, line for the prose, proofread for the mistakes that survive everything else. Books fail in reviews over editing more than any other production choice.

Step 3–4

Format for the stores — and design for the thumbnail

eBooks ship as EPUB — reflowable text that adapts to every screen — with print-on-demand needing a separately formatted PDF interior. Store validators reject malformed files, and Word exports are malformed by default; our formatting guide covers the specifics. The cover, meanwhile, will be judged at thumbnail size in a search-results row: genre-correct and title-legible at 60 pixels wide beats beautiful-at-full-size every time. Step 5–6

Choose stores and set up accounts

Amazon KDP is non-negotiable (the majority of eBook sales); Apple Books, Google Play Books and Kobo Writing Life extend reach at no cost. Create the accounts yourself, in your own name — any service that insists on publishing through its accounts is holding your book hostage (a documented complaint pattern). We set stores up with you, never instead of you. Complete each store's tax interview early; it gates your royalties.

Step 7–8

Metadata, pricing — and launch

Metadata is how stores find you: a keyword-bearing subtitle, a description written to sell (first two lines matter most — they show before the "read more" fold), and categories chosen for winnability. Pricing: $2.99–$9.99 hits Amazon's 70% royalty band; $0.99 is a launch tactic, not a living. Then launch is a process, not a day — early reviews, your email list, and the tactics ranked honestly in our marketing guide.

Questions

Asked and answered

How do I publish an eBook for the first time?

In order: finish and edit the manuscript, format it as EPUB, design a cover, choose your stores, create author accounts, write metadata, upload, price and publish. Each step is covered in this guide.

Should I self-publish or seek a traditional publisher?

Traditional trades control and time (agents, submissions, 1–3 year timelines) for prestige and bookstore reach. Self-publishing trades those for speed, 35–70% royalties and full control. For most first-time eBook authors, self-publishing is the rational start.

How much does it cost to publish an eBook?

Uploading to stores is free. The real costs are production: editing, formatting and cover — roughly $1,000–$3,000 professionally for a typical eBook, less at package rates.

How long does the whole process take?

With a finished manuscript: 2–4 weeks through editing, formatting, cover and upload. Writing is the long pole — 6–8 weeks ghostwritten, often a year alone.
