Lead Magnet Ebook: How to Plan, Structure and Write One
A lead magnet ebook is a short, free guide that solves one specific problem for your ideal reader in exchange for an email address. Keep it focused, make it easy to finish, and plan the follow-up emails before you write a word.
What is a lead magnet ebook?
A lead magnet is a free resource you give to a visitor in exchange for their contact details. HubSpot, Ahrefs and GetResponse all describe it this way, and all list the ebook as a common format. An ebook works as a lead magnet when it teaches something useful, starts a relationship, and gives you permission to email the reader again.
A lead magnet ebook is not the product you sell. It is the first step in a path that usually runs like this: a call to action, a landing page with a short form, a thank-you page with the download, and a follow-up email. Mailchimp and HubSpot both describe this path.
A lead magnet is shorter and narrower than a book you sell, and it is written to move the reader to a next step, such as a call, a course or a service. For a full book to sell, see eBook ghostwriting.
Is an ebook the right format?
Not always. OptinMonster points out that a checklist or template can sometimes deliver the same result faster, and that long ebooks can make prospects feel overwhelmed. Mailchimp's 2026 section says generic ebooks struggle to capture attention and that specific, short, actionable offers do better.
An ebook is a good fit when:
- Your topic is too broad for one blog post. Ahrefs makes this point.
- You already have several posts on one subject that you can combine, expand and gate. HubSpot gives this as a standard approach.
- Your buyers research before they buy. Hostinger says ebooks suit audiences actively researching a topic, such as B2B experts and consultants.
How long should a lead magnet ebook be?
The sources do not agree, and nobody has a universal number. Here is what the pages we opened say.
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Designrr | Default range of 2,000 to 5,000 words, or about 10 to 25 pages. It suggests 5 to 12 pages for cold traffic and 15 to 30 pages for warm or B2B audiences with original data. It also says about 30 pages is a ceiling, citing Beacon. |
| Hostinger | Ebooks are typically 10 to 50 pages. |
| Mailchimp | Gives no recommended length. |
| HubSpot | Gives no page or word count; calls lead magnets "long-form" resources. |
| GetResponse (survey) | In a 2020 survey of 790 marketers, 58.6% said short-form written content converted better than long-form. These are self-reported answers, not measured conversion data, and the short-form group included newsletters and checklists as well as ebook samples. |
Our practical reading: aim for something your reader can finish in one sitting, roughly 2,000 to 5,000 words. Cold readers who have never heard of you need less; people who already know you may read more. Test and adjust, as Mailchimp advises. We found no reputable source that proves one exact page count converts best.
What structure works?
Designrr's structure advice matches what the other sources imply, and it is simple to follow:
- Cover and title. A title that states a benefit, plus a subtitle that names the outcome the reader will reach.
- Table of contents. Designrr suggests clickable links for anything over 8 pages.
- Short introduction. About one page on the reader's problem and what they will have by the end.
- Three to seven chapters. Each solves one sub-problem. Add a visual break every few paragraphs.
- Call to action. A clear last page that says what to do next, with contextual links where it fits.
Ahrefs lists six traits of a good lead magnet: helpful and actionable, compelling, instantly accessible, high quality, relevant, and a clear conversion path. Treat them as a checklist when you review a draft.
Design matters too. Designrr recommends body text of at least 11 point, a single-column layout and files under 5 MB. Our ebook formatting service handles layout.
How do you plan one?
Plan the whole path, not only the file. Work through these steps in order.
- Pick one reader. HubSpot advises tailoring each offer to a single buyer persona. Write down who they are and what they are stuck on.
- Pick one problem and one promise. OptinMonster recommends one quick win instead of a broad overview. Finish this sentence: "After reading this, you will be able to ___."
- Check demand. Ahrefs suggests using keyword, competitor or social research to find a topic people already want.
- Choose what to repurpose. Look through your posts, talks and emails for material to reuse.
- Decide the next step. Every chapter should lead toward what you want the reader to do after the last page.
- Outline the follow-up emails. Hostinger suggests a welcome sequence of about 3 to 7 emails over the first two weeks. HubSpot suggests refreshing the ebook roughly every 6 to 12 months.
This is also where a clear brief helps a writer. Our consultation asks for your topic, audience and the feeling you want before writing starts.
List-building basics after the download
A great ebook with a weak path around it will not build a list. These basics come up again and again in the sources.
- Use a focused landing page. Hostinger advises sending ad traffic to a standalone page about the freebie, not the homepage. HubSpot suggests removing the navigation bar.
- Keep the form short. Mailchimp says name and email usually works best, and that each extra field tends to reduce sign-ups, though the leads you get may be better qualified. HubSpot says the same about minimal forms.
- Deliver instantly. Ahrefs lists instant access as a trait of a good lead magnet. Send the file on a thank-you page and by email.
- Follow up. Mailchimp, HubSpot and Hostinger all describe a welcome email or sequence. Introduce your offer gradually.
- Promote it. Put it in blog posts, on your homepage and in social bios. For more ideas see our ebook marketing guide.
- Follow email law. In the US, the FTC says CAN-SPAM covers all commercial email, including business-to-business messages. Requirements include truthful headers and subject lines, a valid postal address, and a working opt-out honored within 10 business days. The FTC lists penalties of up to $53,088 per violating email. This is general information, not legal advice.
We do not quote conversion rates here. Some pages claim figures such as 10% to 20%, but the page we opened gives them as the author's own estimate with no source.
How can a ghostwriter help?
Many experts know their subject well but lack the time to write it up. A ghostwriter turns your knowledge into a finished guide in your voice, and you stay the author.
Here is how that works with us:
- You share your topic, audience and the feeling you want in a free 15 to 20 minute consultation.
- You are matched with a writer in your genre and you approve the match.
- Your writer studies how you speak and you approve a first-chapter voice sample before the full manuscript is written.
- You review chapter by chapter, with two revision rounds included.
- You keep 100% of the copyright, royalties and credit under a signed work-for-hire agreement, and your name goes on the cover.
For expert guides and thought leadership, see business book ghostwriting. The question of how AI fits into this is covered in our guide to human vs AI written ebooks. Our manuscripts are written by human ghostwriters, and we do not use AI to draft them.
Which package fits a lead magnet ebook?
Our prices are fixed per project, not per word, and each is a "from" price. A short lead magnet is a normal project. Over 80,000 words is quoted individually, which will not apply to a guide of this kind.
| Package | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Basic, from $2,850 | Ghostwriting only: a genre-matched writer, voice sample, chapter-by-chapter approval, two revision rounds, Word and PDF files. Usually 6 to 8 weeks. Good if you already have a designer or want to format it yourself. |
| Professional, from $3,950 | Everything in Basic plus developmental edit, line edit, proofread, Kindle and EPUB formatting with clickable contents, a named project manager and weekly updates. Usually 8 to 10 weeks. Good for a polished downloadable guide. |
| Premium, from $5,500 | Everything in Professional plus cover design, print-interior formatting where needed, publishing to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Google Play and Kobo, and metadata optimization. Usually 10 to 12 weeks. Good if you also want the ebook on retail stores. |
Payment is 50% to start and 50% on final delivery, and projects over $3,500 can be split into three monthly installments at no interest or fees. See pricing for details. To get a fixed quote, use the contact form; we reply within one business day.
Frequently asked questions
What is a lead magnet ebook?
It is a free ebook offered in exchange for an email address. It teaches the reader something useful about one problem, builds trust, and starts a follow-up conversation. It is different from an ebook you sell, because its job is to lead to a next step with you, such as a call, a course or a service.
How long should a lead magnet ebook be?
Designrr gives a default of 2,000 to 5,000 words, about 10 to 25 pages, and Hostinger says ebooks are typically 10 to 50 pages. No reputable source we found proves a single best length. Aim for something a reader can finish in one sitting, then test and adjust with your own audience.
Should I gate the ebook behind an email form?
That is a trade-off. Ahrefs notes that lead magnets add friction, so you must decide whether leads matter more than organic traffic and brand awareness. OptinMonster suggests a long ungated guide for search traffic alongside a gated version. If list growth is the goal, gate it and keep the form short.
Can a lead magnet ebook become a paid book later?
Yes. You can expand a guide into a full book, or publish a paid edition on retail stores. Our Premium package handles upload to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Google Play and Kobo through your own accounts.
How long does it take to get one written?
Our Basic package usually takes 6 to 8 weeks, Professional 8 to 10 weeks and Premium 10 to 12 weeks. Timing depends on length, how quickly you review chapters and which services you add. Our guide on how long it takes to write an ebook explains the stages.
